An individual profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.
Market Movement in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the period preceding former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A single trader, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Probability Spikes Before News Break
Platform data shows that traders put the odds of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
But the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A handful of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Legal Questions Emerges
Elected officials are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to politics.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
