The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
